Domaine Muller-Koeberlé 4L — A Joyride Through Alsace Domaine Muller-Koeberlé’s latest creation, the white blend “4L,” is a marvel of clarity and energy—maximum freshness with minimal intervention. The mischievous Squirrel we met in Mobylette has traded its moped for a Renault 4L. And this time, it’s going the distance and for speed. There’s no time for maceration here. Whole bunches go straight to the press, bringing together the Magnificent Alsatian Seven: Pinot Noir, Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois. The opening is a jubilant collision of primary fruit, instantly lifted by the aromatic intensity of Gewurztraminer and Muscat. Crisp white fruits—apple, pear, citrus zest—burst forward, framed by rose and lychee. Granite soils lend the crucial backbone: a mineral and acidic drive that threads through the mid-palate with precision, cutting cleanly through the textural richness of Pinot Gris. The finish hums with salinity, grounding the exotic fruit and leaving a mouthwatering echo that insists on another sip. The name “4L” nods to the classic Renault—simple, robust, and universally loved—signaling a new spin on the estate’s cult success, Mobylette. Where Mobylette (named after the vintage moped) showcased texture and grip through skin maceration, 4L represents a pivot toward purity and finesse. It strips away the layers to reveal a wine of precision and transparency—showing that David Koeberlé can master both the tactile allure of skin contact and the crystalline poise of a direct-press white. Serve chilled, around 8–10°C, with raw seafood, a fennel salad, or simply as a complex, compelling aperitif. This is Alsace in its most honest, delicious, and energetic form: a joyride worth taking again and again. WINE PROFILE M-K 4L
